‘Clop’ me Amadeus

Some might say that Belgians, Clydesdales, Percherons and Shires prancing to the music of Bach and Mozart is not a typical Calgary Stampede scene. Then again, the DundeeWealth Heavy Horse Show, held on the opening weekend of Stampede, is anything but typical. Not only is it the premier draft horse competition in North America, it is also the only event in the world where 2,000-pound draft horses march in tune to the music of a live orchestra, made up by members of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO).

“It’s a natural phenomenon,” says Erin Bartlett, Calgary Stampede Agriculture program coordinator. “The horses are not trained to walk with the music but they naturally pick it up and strut in time. When you close your eyes, you can actually feel the beat. It’s an amazing experience.”

It’s hard to know what the great classical composers would have thought had they seen the marching draft horses, but Stampede audiences will have the chance to imagine during the four shows July 3-5 in the Pengrowth Saddledome. Each event is free with gate admission.

The Sunday show features the World Six Horse Hitch Championship, when North America’s top six horse hitches are showcased centre ring. It’s a must-see for horse and music lovers alike. For more information click here.

The remarkable blend of agriculture and the arts will be on display Wednesday, June 3 at Heritage Park during a special sneak peek at the CPO’s POPS in the Park. For more information about seeing the six horse hitch that evening, click here.
